Dear Friend,

I’m Aurelio. The handsome man on my left is Victor.

A few months back, Victor and I were married. It was our third try.

They say the third time’s the charm, but this time, it truly was. The first time Victor and I tried to marry, we were living in Honduras where marriage equality is illegal. The second time, we were in an ICE detention facility in Georgia where we couldn’t afford an officiant to certify our marriage.

That changed when we contacted Immigration Equality to help us out of detention so that we could experience the liberty and rights we—as a gay couple in Honduras—never had.

Without Immigration Equality, we would neither be free nor married. If you give to Immigration Equality now, a generous donor will match your gift to DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT. The organization must raise $200,000 before December 31st to meet their year-end fundraising goal.

Spending the holidays with the man of my dreams.

Growing up in Honduras, Victor and I realized it was impossible to be openly gay. We were harassed and abused by strangers, teachers, landlords, employers—even our own families.

We needed to flee. After we crossed the U.S.-Mexico border and asked for asylum, we were detained by CBP before being transferred into ICE custody. Together, we survived unbearable conditions like being forbidden to bathe or being forced to sleep on a concrete floor.

We were scared, frustrated, and tired. But Immigration Equality was our rock.

We called the office and within a week, we were working with a lawyer who helped get us released. We desperately needed the support that we couldn’t find at home. Immigration Equality met that need for us.

Now, I am able to spend the holidays with the man of my dreams free of fear and ready to build a new life together.

Friend, supporters like you made an impact on our lives by supporting Immigration Equality. Please extend your impact to hundreds of LGBTQ asylum seekers this holiday season.
