John — it’s not going to be easy to defend our 5-seat Democratic majority in the House in 2022. But we have to get it done. And we can do this. And it sure as hell couldn’t be any more important that we do. Let us explain why.
Election night in 2018 was a pivotal moment for Democrats and our democracy. Voters showed Donald Trump and the GOP that the American people demand better from our elected officials. We flipped 41 House seats from Red-to-Blue and put a stop to the unified Republican government that passed Trump’s tax scam, attempted to repeal the Affordable Care Act , and looked the other way as Trump abused his office. We brought accountability.
But in 2020, House Democrats lost 13 seats. Despite the fact that President Biden defeated Donald Trump by over 7 million votes nationwide. We just barely managed to maintain our Democratic majority in the House and secure the Senate.
But because we did earn a majority in both houses, we passed bills that lifted half of America’s impoverished children out of poverty, sped up the vaccine, helped small businesses stay alive, and made the most massive investment in our nation’s infrastructure since Eisenhower.
To preserve those gains and build on them, we need to start preparing for next November. It’s no secret the president’s party typically loses seats in the midterms. But that’s because the president’s party typically gained seats when he was elected. That didn’t happen. We’ve already had our correction. And we cannot hand the House Majority over to Kevin McCarthy. Not now. Not ever.
