How we collectively change the world.

Dear John

Here at Equality Now, we have always believed in the power of partnership. For nearly thirty years, we have worked with global partners to make equality a reality for women and girls, and our continued collaboration is essential in our ability to connect with organizations and activists in their regions.

Your generous support enables us to build and grow these partnerships, and create lasting change in women and girls’ lives.

Here’s just one example of how our partnerships have changed lives.

In 2018, school-aged girls in Sierra Leone were confronted with sexist roadblocks which prohibited pregnant students from attending school.

Within that year, working with our West African partners, Women Against Violence in Society (W.A.V.E.S.), Defence for Children Sierra Leone and the Child Welfare Society, we filed a case against the government of Sierra Leone before the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice.

Equality Now brought expertise in strategic impact litigation and decades of experience working with international and regional human rights bodies to fight for justice. Just as crucially, their presence on the ground in the region meant W.A.V.E.S., Defence for Children Sierra Leone and the Child Welfare Society had a unique insight into the real-life impact of the school ban on girls’ futures.

Sierra Leone was ordered to remove the ban and to allow all girls to attend mainstream school regardless of their pregnancy status when ECOWAS ruled in the girls’ favor on December 12, 2019. Less than three months later, Sierra Leone’s President Bio announced the country would finally end its ban on pregnant girls attending school.

This is the power of partnership, and a direct result of how collective power can change the world, and the future for women and girls.

This is why your partnership is more important than ever before.

By making a year-end gift today, you will directly support our work in Sierra Leone and around the globe. You are the core of our work, and we couldn’t do it without you.

Your support will make twice the impact today, because this year the InMaat Foundation has generously offered to match $100,000 worth of gifts to this campaign. Every dollar you give will be matched, going twice as far towards providing women and girls with protections they deserve.
Make double the difference with your gift today. ([link removed])

We continue to work together with our partners in Sierra Leone to ensure the implementation of the ruling, sensitize stakeholders on the rights and needs of adolescent girls, and support the enactment of policies and procedures that will allow girls to access schools safely. None of which would be possible without you.

Because when you change the law, you can change everything.
In solidarity,

Faiza Jama Mohamed
Africa Regional Director
