We will look back forever on 2021 as a historic year for working families. In the past year, workers from countless sectors took action and won. Tens of thousands of workers went on strike to fight for fair wages, a voice on the job, and a safe place to work. These actions are direct evidence that our efforts and campaigns work and that people everywhere finally realize the importance of dignity in the workplace.
With your help, Jobs With Justice and our network won big in 2021.
Our Always Essential campaign won historic, precedent-setting victories for essential workers in New York, Ohio, and Harris County, Texas. Harris County is the most populous county in the state and just two weeks ago adopted a first-of-its-kind essential worker task force, where workers can set the health and safety standards they need. The victory in Harris County helps establish a brand-new structure, where workers can directly impact their working conditions and help build the foundation for what's possible across the country.
Jobs With Justice has long strived to protect immigrant workers from exploitation and deportation. In September, we finally won a significant victory when the Department of Homeland Security announced new guidelines for all non-citizens to exercise their right to report workplace violations without fear of deportation. This achievement comes after years of Jobs With Justice and partners pushing to increase protections for immigrant workers who are organizing against unsafe working conditions.
We led a multi-faceted campaign to permanently strengthen laws that protect workers and educate the public around the importance of the Protect the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. The PRO Act is our most significant opportunity to update our country's woefully outdated labor laws. If passed, the PRO Act would finally give millions of working people – especially Black, brown and immigrant communities– the tools they need to come together at work to demand fair wages and the right to form a union.

And these are just some examples of how Jobs With Justice led the fight to permanently transform what’s possible for working people. But despite our progress, we must remain vigilant because we know that corporate CEOs, politicians, and lobbyists will stop at nothing to rig the rules against us.
