The mass shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan two weeks ago briefly shocked the nation back into awareness about the public health emergency that is gun violence. Already, outrage has faded and the news cycle has moved on.

But we haven’t moved on. And we know you haven’t either. We are more determined than ever to make bold progress in the fight against gun violence, in honor of all victims and survivors.

We are more determined than ever because while public, indiscriminate mass shootings like Oxford have been less common since the start of the pandemic, just about every other type of gun violence has skyrocketed. 2021 is on track to be the deadliest year in decades.

This week, we told you about our plans for the year ahead. We are ready to prohibit high-capacity magazines and untraceable firearms, expand protections against armed intimidation, secure meaningful funding for community-based violence prevention programs, and more. But we’re facing an uphill battle. Our opponents are fired up and the strain of the pandemic could undo all of our progress.
