John,

If you care about American cities, you probably get a little sad when you think about what's happened to Detroit.

And it's no wonder. Perhaps more than any other US metro, the Motor City has been held up again and again as a cautionary tale about what can happen when industry collapses, the wealthy flee, and the few people who remain are left with an (over)built environment they can't afford to maintain.

Of course, the subtext of this narrative is clear. It's a shame that happened in Michigan—but we've learned from their example. Our cities surely won't end up the same way.

Today on the site, we're revisiting a classic article from our founder, Chuck Marohn, that questions that dangerous assumption.

Because if we were smart, we wouldn't look at Detroit as place that was left behind as our nation's history marched on. We would look at Detroit and see our future—unless we reckon with the reality of what our dominant development pattern has done to our places.

Detroit deserves better. And your city does too. Will you help more Americans see that we are all Detroit—and we have an enormous opportunity to rebuild all our places stronger?

-Kea and the rest of the Strong Towns Team.

PS: You might not think that Detroit has much in common with the seemingly thriving communities of Southern California. But on December 4th-6th, you'll have the opportunity to see how these communities are more similar than you think—and what we can do to build SoCal cities stronger. Check out the Strong Towns: Southern California regional gathering and buy your tickets now.
