Hey John,

A few years ago when Katie enrolled her daughter Betsy in pre-school at UC
Irvine where she taught, Betsy’s pre-school tuition was more than what it
cost to be an undergrad. Since then, the problem has only gotten worse.

Child care costs have risen by 1,000% in recent years, faster than the
cost of things like housing or healthcare. The skyrocketing cost of child
care is an issue for families who are trying to make ends meet, and for
parents who want to work outside of the home but can’t find the reliable,
affordable child care they need to do so.

This isn’t just an issue that families with young kids should care about.
The child care crisis is hurting our entire economy. When families don’t
have the tools they need to be successful, we don’t have a strong, stable,
globally competitive economy. And as more and more women leave the
workforce (we’re at a 30 year low for women’s participation in the
workforce!), the gap between men and women in the workforce is
widening—leaving our whole economy vulnerable.

While the pandemic exacerbated these issues, it wasn’t the root cause. Our
country has *never* invested in child care.

The Build Back Better Act would finally make much needed investments in
child care—capping family’s child care expenses, and supporting families
with young kids by providing universal pre-kindergarten and expanding the
Child Tax Credit. We’ve passed this bill in the House, but now it’s in the
Senate’s hands. [ [link removed] ]Sign Katie’s petition to show your support for
