Dear John,

At Children's Hospital Los Angeles we stand by our patients and families every step of the way: from tests, to diagnoses, to treatments, to playful distractions, to bursting joy. And, with your support, our doctors, researchers, nurses and other staff do everything possible to help sick kids in the hospital feel better--kids like Emme.

When 3-year-old Emme went from vivacious, outgoing toddler to being barely able to get out of bed four days later, it was clear that something was wrong. Her parents rushed her to the pediatrician's office--they, in turn, sent her to the local emergency room. But what was wrong with Emme was beyond what their local ER could address.

After being transferred to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, her parents learned that their toddler was in complete heart failure.

Kids like Emme are why we're looking for 310 supporters to answer a critical call by midnight tomorrow: Make a tax-deductible gift of $10 or more that goes twice as far to help families that need answers...and hope.
Your gift to the Children's Fund will be DOUBLED by a generous match from Credit Unions for Kids, up to $300,000.

The specialists at Children's Hospital Los Angeles Heart Institute explained to Emme's mom, Britney, that her daughter had dilated cardiomyopathy, and her heart was having trouble pumping blood around her body. Emme was going to need a heart transplant.

For the next few months, Children's Hospital Los Angeles was Emme's new home as she waited for a match with a donor heart. But it wasn't long until it was clear that more drastic measures would need to be taken for Emme to survive the long wait for a heart.

As a temporary solution, Emme received a Berlin Heart EXCOR, a kind of external artificial heart that takes a lot of pressure off a patient's overworked heart. The device has been used in about 1,000 cases worldwide and, while a temporary fix, is the only solution of its kind
for small children.

Be one of 310 supporters whose gifts to the Children's Fund will be DOUBLED to help give kids access to lifesaving innovations and treatments. Will you be one of them?

About two months after the successful Berlin Heart implantation, Emme's family got the call they'd been hoping and waiting for. Emme had been matched with a donor heart. Emme got her new heart on Nov. 19, and she went home just a few weeks later. Within a few days, she was already playing with her sister the same way she had before getting sick.

It took state-of-the-art medical technology and top experts at Children's Hospital Los Angeles-powered by the generous support of people like you-to keep Emme alive until doctors could find her a new heart.

Make more stories like Emme's possible-please give as generously as you can. Right now, every $1 becomes $2 when you give before midnight tomorrow, thanks to Credit Unions for Kids. Make your gift today.
