It appears Ron Johnson is still on the cutting edge of fake science.

This is a guy who got his YouTube account suspended early this year for spreading bad vaccine information. The other day, he was caught on tape saying that gargling mouthwash can prevent coronavirus infections. (I shouldn’t have to say this, but no, mouthwash is not a cure for COVID.)

This comes just days after he attacked Dr. Anthony Fauci not just about the recent pandemic, but in the fight against AIDS over three decades ago, saying that Fauci “overhyped it.” One might expect this nonsense from a street-corner pamphleteer, but coming from a United States senator, it’s disqualifying.

The truth is Ron Johnson is up to something far more nefarious than peddling snake oil to cure COVID. He’s been working behind the scenes on an effort to put his state’s federal elections in the hands of the Republican-controlled legislature. Currently, the elections are overseen by a bipartisan commission and perhaps that’s too fair-minded for Senator Johnson. He talks a lot about irregularities and doubts about the 2020 election but has been busted on camera privately admitting it’s all a bunch of hogwash.

That hasn’t stopped him from gargling that hogwash, of course. He’s still repeating lies in an attempt to put his friends in charge of his own election (and the next presidential election, in which Wisconsin is certain to play a critical role).

January 6th is far from over. There’s a coordinated attempt to undermine our democracy and install Trump loyalists into elections commissions across the country — and Ron Johnson is doing his part in the Ground Zero state of Wisconsin.
