Today is the sixth and potentially the last payment to parents who are receiving the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC), a measure passed during March’s American Rescue Plan that provides direct financial support to parents and guardians across the country.
The expanded Child Tax Credit has been a lifeline for families. In just six short months, the rates of poverty have decreased while food security has increased. Families have been able to afford essentials, like food and rent, deal with rising costs, and save for the future. It has been especially critical to families of color, who have disproportionately borne the brunt of the pandemic.Send an email to Congress showing your support to extend monthly payments for parents or guardians.
The Child Tax Credit ensures that our country’s economic recovery is felt by everyone, from working families struggling with basic needs like food, rent, and bills, to middle-class families that need help with child care and college savings. Economists also agree that expanded, monthly Child Tax Credit payments are working. Parents are encouraged to go back to work knowing monthly payments are coming to help cover the costs of child care and allow them to prepare for the worse.
Everyone should have the means to care for their families, and prepare for the future. By extending the CTC, Congress will keep families from falling into poverty when the next crisis hits. Putting money in people’s wallets ensures families will not only recover but thrive.
