Just over nine years ago my own son was shot and killed in a senseless act of violence. Then a few weeks later on December 14, 2012 – tragedy struck in Newtown, CT.

The Sandy Hook shooting shocked our nation: 20 first grade students – six and seven years old – were murdered in their classroom, along with six educators. Today, those children would be 15 and 16-year-old teenagers – except they never got to grow up.

This morning, President Biden shared my frustrations with federal inaction on gun safety over the last decade, remarking: “As a nation, we owe all these families more than our prayers, we owe them action.”

Nine years after Sandy Hook, all of us in this gun safety movement – and many Americans – are still asking the same question. The same question we've asked after Las Vegas, Pulse Nightclub, Parkland, most recently Oxford, Michigan – and after every mass shooting that makes headlines: If now is not the time to act, then when?

Today, I'm solemnly remembering the children and adults we lost in the Sandy Hook shooting, their families are in my thoughts and prayers.

John, I want you to know that I'm more committed than ever before to staying in Congress until we win our fight for gun safety reform. I'm a mom on a mission. I don't want anyone else in this country to ever have to suffer the tragic loss that my family has endured.

With love,

Lucy
