Last week, I shared my mother’s story of relying on Kansas City’s bus system to get to work and take her kids from place to place.

Some 30 years later, she was an inspiration for making Kansas City the first major American city to implement a Zero Fare Transit initiative, and last week, she met President Biden during his visit to our city.

My mom’s story is that of so many Kansas Citians. She relied on public transportation to provide for her family and make a brighter future for her children. Today, our Zero Fare Transit initiative means that no one will ever have to choose between taking the bus and putting food on the table.

About 30 years ago, there was a woman whose family lived primarily on Kansas City’s East Side. She had three kids within five years of age, and relied on the Kansas City bus system to get to work and take her kids from place to place.

The waits could be long. The quarters it cost to ride the bus at the time added up and sometimes meant she couldn’t put dinner on the table, but she continued riding the bus to work as she fought to create opportunities for her children.

That woman was my mother — and she was an inspiration for making Kansas City the first major American city to implement a Zero Fare Transit initiative.

President Biden understands that infrastructure is personal. It’s about the Kansas Citian looking to find a job that helps them reach the middle class, the Missourian who is looking to access the skills they need to be competitive in the next generation.

That’s why I was damn proud to welcome President Biden to Kansas City today as he laid out how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will transform our infrastructure and create union jobs.

Kansas City has come a long way by fixing our roads, implementing Zero Fare Transit and making all public transportation emission-free.

But with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’ll be able to accomplish so much more.
