Liz WillenDear reader,

For years, The Hechinger Report has reported on the many obstacles on the way to a higher education degree, among them something as simple as a lack of transportation. We also spend a great deal of time writing about change and innovation, this week featuring a new, hyperfast approach to job training that could spread as career switchers seek ways to rapidly reskill.

At the same time, the nation’s community colleges, which play a key role in helping Americans prepare for new careers, will soon face more uncertainty when the infusion of federal relief money these institutions used to keep students on track goes away. As we enter the holiday season amid more pandemic-related uncertainty, we welcome your thoughts and ideas. We love to hear from our readers, and we also hope you will spread the word about our work and encourage others to sign up for our newsletters – and become a member.

‘Rapid reskilling’ seeks to speed up the frustratingly slow pace of switching careers.

Federal relief money boosted community colleges, but now it’s going away

Chronically starved for resources, these schools have used federal emergency funds to help more students keep going and graduate. But what happens when the money goes away?

PROOF POINTS: Nationwide, evaluating and penalizing teachers rarely works

Teacher accountability relies on a nearby pool of good teachers to replace the bad ones.

Congress is cutting the funds that could have closed the homework gap

Billions of dollars that connected children to the internet during the pandemic is at risk of disappearing.

TEACHER VOICE: I became a better middle school teacher once I stopped being a dictator
