Friends, the House is about to vote on my Combating International Islamophobia Act — a bill that will finally address the spike in anti-Muslim incidents around the world.
We’ve recently seen the horrific murders of three generations of a Muslim family in Canada. A gunman targeted two mosques in New Zealand and killed more than 51 people. We cannot let more sacred places of worship be violated and more lives be taken.
Passing this bill right now, when Muslims are facing more and more bigotry and hate, couldn’t be more important. It will create a Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Islamophobia, a government office that will make sure we have the resources to defend human rights and freedom of religion worldwide.
It will send a powerful message that we refuse to stand idly by in the face of division and hatred.
