Dear John,

Women are fighting every day for their health. Here are three WomenHeart Champions’ stories:

After years of various symptoms, it took going into cardiac arrest at 23 years old to “prove” that Starr was sick. Before that, doctors assumed her symptoms were due to any number of other issues, but she was never given a cardiac exam.

Florence was in and out of the ER several times within a year, but because she lacked insurance, was never given the proper diagnostic testing. It wasn’t until she needed emergency surgery to save her life that she was diagnosed with heart disease.

Brandie was told her symptoms were typical of pregnancy, even though she insisted that something was wrong. She finally found a hospital that took her seriously and discovered she was in heart failure, which eventually led to her need for a heart transplant.

These are just a small sample of the thousands of women who experience missed and delayed diagnosis of heart disease. Since its founding, WomenHeart has been committed to bringing these stories to light, supporting these women and advocating for change.
Earlier this year, WomenHeart hosted a convening of experts to develop solutions for improving women’s diagnostic journeys. It resulted in a report ([link removed] full of potential research questions that could lead to interventions for patients, clinicians, and health care systems. (An appendix in the report includes a list of more womens’ misdiagnosis stories.)

As we continue this work, we need your support. A year-end donation will allow us to lift up more women’s stories, to advocate for more research on heart disease in women and to fight for policies that promote health equity.Donate Now
Heart disease is the number one killer of women. We are working hard to increase awareness – not only so women are aware of their risk – but also so clinicians and health systems are equipped with the training and tools they need to diagnose women in a timely and accurate fashion.
