John,
A recent study published in the science journal Nature Reviews has a dire forecast: California’s Sierra Nevada snowpack could disappear within 25 years if global warming continues.
The snowpack is a critical resource for the Western United States. It normally accounts for approximately 30% of California’s freshwater supply.
This is bad news for a region already experiencing a mega-drought. The drought is already resulting in record-low snowfalls, and it is becoming increasingly clear that this trend is here to stay.
Scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers are deeply concerned about the impact on California, Colorado, and other states without regular snowfalls in the Sierra Nevadas and other mountain ranges.
Earlier this year, SEEC member Rep. Jared Huffman introduced a water infrastructure bill to improve drought preparedness and water supply reliability, with a particular emphasis on building resilient water systems in the Western states.
Rep. Huffman, who is Chair of the House Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife, is a vigorous proponent of the need to take immediate action to secure reliable water access in the future.
Because of his initiative, SEEC members of Congress secured $550 million for the Bureau of Water Reclamation to construct drinking water projects and $100 million for water reuse grants in the Build Back Better Act which passed the House.
That bill is now in the Senate, waiting for approval.
John, the disappearing Sierra Nevada snowpack is deadly serious. California is the largest food producer in the U.S., so if its water runs out, the consequences for the entire country are enormous. SEEC members of Congress are stepping up to ensure funding is available to secure a better water future.
But more needs to be done. That’s why it’s important we elect more SEEC members to Congress. Can you pitch in immediately with a donation to help? [[link removed]]
