John, today I stood at the Capitol alongside DC’s Attorney General Karl Racine and Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton to

announce a landmark lawsuit against the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and more than 30 individual members and affiliates for their role in coordinating an act of domestic terrorism against our democracy on January 6.
We take this responsibility seriously. For more than a century, ADL has worked to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. To deliver on that mission, we have been at the forefront of strategically monitoring, exposing and countering extremist threats from across the ideological spectrum.

ADL’s experts tracked the planning of the January 6th attack on the Capitol and helped identify perpetrators and any connections they had to groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. We are honored now to be putting that expertise to the service of the District of Columbia and the brave officers who were injured or killed as a result of that day.
The lawsuit, for which ADL is serving as pro bono counsel, sends a clear message of deterrence to any individual or group seeking to repeat the insurrection: hate and violence will not be tolerated in Washington, D.C. or anywhere in the United States.
It’s About Justice and Accountability
This is about justice for the District and the public safety officers who risked their lives that day. This is about accountability for those who played a key role in plotting, planning, and carrying out the violence. No one will forget the images we saw. And for the Jewish community, seeing individuals wearing antisemitic t-shirts like “Camp Auschwitz” while storming the Capitol building, was particularly searing.
This is the first case brought by a state or municipality arising from the January 6 attack. It is also the only lawsuit that seeks redress for the harm sustained by the District itself — including its police officers in the Metropolitan Police District (MPD).
This was not a rally or protest — it was a coordinated attack. The Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and their members and affiliates inflicted unspeakable violence on the District’s police officers and other public safety officers who were tasked with protecting the Capitol and members of Congress that day.
Harm to Law Enforcement Officers
As a direct result of the January 6th attack, MPD officers sustained bruises, lacerations, shattered spinal discs, wounds and concussions. These were just the physical wounds. Many MPD officers also required — and in some cases, still require — mental health care following the traumatic events that unfolded during the attack.
The violence perpetrated that day — while unique in its severity and scope — was far from an isolated occurrence.

This lawsuit is about justice and accountability, and about turning back that tide. It is about fighting hate for good.
