I remember when Democrats used to be able to work with Republicans in Congress on a broad range of issues. When the GOP was a party of ideas, and they didn’t pose such an existential threat to our Democracy.

They used to believe in something. I might have disagreed with them on most of their policy views, but they believed in something . And one thing we did agree on? That our democracy was vital to the future of our country, and that we needed to lead the rest of the world by the strength of our ideals.

That is no longer the case for the GOP. Far from it. This is who best represents the Republican Party today:

She’s straight-up Looney Toons. A conspiracy abetting, bigoted, fear-mongering disgrace. But Members like Marjorie Taylor Greene hold much of the clout in the modern-day Republican Party.

And of course, she’s lying here. But truth isn’t ever the point for her. She is a kind of vile performance artist, who delights in ginning up right-wing attacks on me, and the threats to my safety that go along with it.

The Marjorie Taylor Greenes represent the new base of the GOP. They reject the results of free and fair elections. And they spread anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and ever more toxic prejudice and bigotry into the public sphere.

The worst part? People like Greene could soon be in even greater positions of power. Their threats of expelling me, censuring me, and stripping me of the ability to hold them — and their master — accountable, can very well come true.

Their leader, Kevin McCarthy, has backed up these threats on the House floor. Repeatedly.

But here’s the thing, we are the last line of defense against this terrifying future. We must prevent our government’s descent into a reality where truth is vilified and lies are rewarded. And it begins with protecting our House Majority. It begins with us.
