House Energy and Commerce Committee Holds Hearing on Biomedical Research
 
Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives held a hearing on H.R. 6000 [ [link removed] ] , The Future of Biomedicine: Translating Biomedical Research into Personalized Health Care: Cures. 2.0. Introduced earlier this year by U.S. Reps. Diane DeGette (D-Colo.) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.), Cures 2.0 is a follow-up to the biomedical innovation law called 21st Century Cures, also known as Cures 1.0. The follow-up legislation includes support for continued study of “long COVID-19”, a condition of patients who continue to feel the impacts of the disease long after they’ve shed the virus. It also includes provisions to permanently remove Medicare’s requirement that a patient live in a rural area and be physically in a doctor’s office or clinic to use telehealth services.
 
Another major provision in the bill would authorize President Biden’s proposal to create the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). Modeled after existing programs in the Departments of Defense and Energy, ARPA-H aims to accelerate research and discoveries through a public–private partnership approach.
 
The 21st Century Cures law focused on developing new treatments, but the Cures 2.0 legislation focuses on delivering those new treatments to patients. There are also sections to improve clinical trial diversity and improve pandemic preparedness.

USPSTF Releases Final Recommendation Statement on Screening and Interventions to Prevent Dental Caries in Children
 
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released its screening and interventions recommendations [ [link removed] ] for children younger than age 5. USPSTF is an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine. The Task Force works to improve the health of people nationwide by making evidence-based recommendations about clinical preventive services, such as screenings, counseling services and preventive medications.
 
Its recommendations are based on a rigorous review of existing, peer-reviewed evidence. Though not a representative of the U.S. government, USPSTF’s recommendations influence policy and insurance coverage decisions.

Department of Education Webinar on Restarting Loan Repayment
 
The Department of Education will hold a webinar [ [link removed] ] on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 2:00 p.m. ET on “Preparing Borrowers to Restart Student Loan Payments”. The webinar is free, but attendees must register.
 
Loan repayments begin and accrual of interest resumes on Jan. 31, 2022.

A Look at Pre-files for 2022 State Legislative Sessions
 
With the beginning of 2022 legislative sessions [ [link removed] ] only a few weeks away, many states have begun pre-filing bills [ [link removed] ] that will be considered during upcoming sessions. Over the next two weeks, the ADEA Advocate will highlight some of the upcoming bills that will be of interest to dental education.
 
In Florida, two bills have been filed that would allow dentists and dental hygienists to take initial licensure exams on manikins rather than live patients. Although the bills are very similar, differences in language between the two bills do exist. HB 517 [ [link removed] ] would specifically require the use of CompeDont DTX [ [link removed] ] , which is approved by the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA), while SB 926 [ [link removed] ] would allow restorations on a manikin that has typodont teeth with simulated caries, as approved by CDCA.
 
There is proposed legislation in Missouri that could benefit dental and dental hygiene students. SB 757 [ [link removed] ] would add dental surgery, dental medicine or dental hygiene students to the list of students eligible for the medical student loan program administered by the state’s Department of Health and Senior Services. If the bill passes, dental and dental hygiene students could be eligible for up to $25,000 in forgivable student loans each academic year in exchange for working in an area of defined need.
