Dear John,

As storms and tornadoes were raging through the midwest, Amazon kept dozens of people working in an Illinois warehouse and didn't let them leave. The consequences were devastating. On Friday night, a tornado tore through the facility, killing at least six Amazon workers and leaving many more injured. The search continues for those still buried beneath the rubble.

We are horrified and angry at Amazon’s failure to keep workers and the community safe. As part of the Athena coalition, we are asking for donations to help support the families who were killed or injured in the warehouse collapse at athenaforall.org/tornado.  Over $7,000 has already been raised with 100% of those funds going to the families of Amazon workers directly impacted by this tragedy.

These deaths are a direct result of Amazon’s power grab for our communities. Workers continue to face grueling quotas in warehouses and delivery trucks to meet demand, even in the face of dangerous storms or heat waves. Small businesses continue to be exploited by partnering with Amazon, with growing seller fees and surveillance over business operations.

Join us on Thursday at 10AM in Zuccotti Park to demand justice and accountability for all who have been harmed by Amazon’s growing dominance. Our New Yorkers for a Fair Economy coalition is rallying and marching to call on Governor Hochul to hold Amazon accountable.

Be sure to donate to the #AmazonTornado Relief Fund and rally with us on Thursday to stand up against the Amazon monopoly!

In solidarity,

Maritza Silva-Farrell
