‘Tis the season to pass important pieces of legislation in the Senate!

Hey Indivisibles,

Even though the year is almost over, there is still so much work to be done in the fight for reconciliation and democracy reform. First of all, let’s talk about reconciliation. As we are sure you remember, the House of Representatives stuck to their promises, and passed Biden’s full Build Back Better agenda (BBB). Now the bill has made its way to the Senate, where we have to work to urgently push senators to pass BBB as soon as possible. Although it might feel like BBB is moving very slowly, this is only because we are trying to navigate past several hurdles in the Senate. We are dealing with Senate Republicans challenging almost every aspect of BBB during budget talks with the Parliamentarian, in addition to pushback from our usuals, Sens. Manchin and Sinema. Biden’s full Build Back Better Agenda (BBB) will make badly needed public investments across the economy, so we need to keep pushing for a vote to get through the Senate as quickly as possible.

Now for democracy: There was a failed procedural vote on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act on November 3. This prompted Senator Schumer to send out another “Dear Colleague” letter to his fellow senators. In this letter, Schumer states that even if he cannot get enough GOP support behind the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Advancement Act, Senate Democrats are not going to stop fighting to “restore our democracy” -- even if they have to go at it alone. Indivisibles who live in Republican states got together to write Senator Schumer and other Senate Democrats a letter of their own -- reminding them how important it is to our democracy that the Freedom to Vote Act and then John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are passed. This letter was sent out last week, and it demands that Democratic senators “do whatever it takes” to get this important piece of legislation passed in Congress. It’s on us to keep pushing for Democrats to fix the filibuster and pass these massively popular bills.

With that, here are your weekly to-dos:

 Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. Call your senator and demand they pass BBB as quickly as possible! The House just passed the Build Back Better Act (BBB) and now it is in the Senate. Now it is time for the Senate to do its job and pass BBB this week. With just a few days left before recess, it is urgent that you call your senator and tell them how important it is that we pass an inclusive recovery bill that works for everyone ASAP.
  2. Call your Senator and demand they fix the filibuster and move quickly to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. Senate Democrats have released a new version of their democracy reform bill called the Freedom to Vote Act. Senator Schumer along with other Democratic senators have agreed to move forward with democracy reform, even without Republican support for the bill. Call your senators and let them know you stand with Sen. Schumer, and you want them to adjust the filibuster now to pass the Freedom to Vote Act before they leave town for the holidays.
  3. If you live in a Blue state, call your senator before their Tuesday caucus meeting to support voting rights. Senate Democrats meet every Tuesday for a weekly caucus luncheon, where they discuss and set their legislative priorities. It’s imperative that they hear from us about the need for structural democracy reform legislation before they go into these important meetings. Call your senators on Tuesday before lunch and let them know you want them to fix the filibuster and fix democracy.
  4. Call your Senator and tell them to reform the courts and protect Roe vs. Wade now. Last week’s Supreme Court news showed the court is preparing to overturn Roe v. Wade. Since we can’t count on the current court to protect our rights, we need to pass legislation in the House and Senate, and unrig the court. (Not sure about that second half? Check out this Washington Post article from last week on the future of the Supreme Court.)
  5. Come together and show love and support for the Western Kentucky communities affected by the devastating storms. Our partners at The Commonwealth Alliance Donor Table have put together a spreadsheet outlining several organizations that are working to provide care, mutual aid, and resources to the communities who have been impacted by this climate emergency -- not just now, but in the months and years to come. All funds raised will be directed to grassroots groups supporting short-term and long-term mutual aid and disaster relief for the communities impacted by the recent tornadoes.

P.S. -- We’re able to fund the ads, call scripts, tools and work of huge weeks like last week because of the generous support of grassroots donors, particularly recurring donors whose support we can count on every month. If you’re able, click here to make a recurring or one-time gift to help fund our work.
