CALENDAR

The following list is only a highlight of what's happening this week with DSA-LA. Please check out our online calendar for full list of committee meetings & chapter events! Be sure to also follow our Instagram & Twitter for real-time announcements and calls-to-action!

Mutual Aid Committee Meeting

Monday, December 13 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join the Mutual Aid Committee for our twice-monthly committee meeting, where we’ll be discussing ongoing and upcoming committee work, as well as helping folks get plugged into other work throughout the city. New members always welcome!

Please RSVP for meeting connection information.

Mutual Aid Committee meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of each month.

SFV Marxism Reading Group

Tuesday, December 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Come read two classic pieces of marxist literature with your SFV branch comrades! We’ll be reading Principles of Communism by Engels and the Manifesto of the Communist Party by Marx and Engels, two classics of socialist thought.

What is communism? What is socialism? What is the proletariat? Where do classes come from? What do we do about it? Come see how early marxists thought about these questions.

Since the writing style in the 19th century is weird we’ll be reading from a collaborative Google doc where we can ask questions, clarify points, and post takes. Please RSVP for access to the doc.

Political Education Event: A Better Holiday is Possible

Wednesday, December 15 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The holidays, like capitalism, are full of unsolvable contradictions. Instead of lamenting another holiday season within the confines of capitalist realism, how can we use these rare opportunities in spaces rife for dialectical engagement to help us organize around our shared values and disarm people to a socialist worldview? How can we find ways to persuasively communicate our popular politics?

This holiday event presented by the DSA-LA Political Education Committee will help prepare us for these kinds of tough political conversations outside of our daily bubbles through study of relational organizing, 1-on-1 discussions, and larger campaign-focused communication strategies as we make strides towards our New Year’s Priority Resolutions.

Come for a lighthearted and informal session featuring a short presentation and facilitated group discussions. This event is open to all and you don’t need any prior knowledge or organizing experience. If you’ve never been to a PolEd event before or want to bring a DSA-curious friend, this is a good place for new members start!

Healthcare Justice Committee Meeting

Wednesday, December 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Please RSVP here to join us for our December Healthcare Justice Committee meeting! We’ll be discussing ongoing AB 1400 work, updates on our November reproductive justice Fund-A-Thon, and more. Zoom link will be provided directly to RSVPs, and an agenda will be sent prior to the meeting.

DSA Wins! Virtual Event with Portland DSA

Thursday, December 16 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us for a virtual event in collaboration with DSA Portland, Tacoma, Los Angeles, and Seattle about electoral wins and lessons from our chapters in recent years! This is a great opportunity to connect with other DSA chapters across the West Coast and share lessons from our campaign trails.

Hear tales from the campaign trail from Robin Wonsley Worlobah, Minneapolis City Councilmember-Elect, Eve Seitchik, Somerville, Massachusetts city council candidate, and Richie Floyd, St. Petersburg, Florida City Councilmember-Elect.

We will also hear from our own candidate, Hugo Soto Martínez who will be talking about how we are building power in CD 13, and our road to success.

Westside PolEd Happy Hour

Thursday, December 16 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join comrades from across the Westside for an informal happy hour with time dedicated to political discussion and socializing.

While not required, we’ll be informally discussing why socialists should fight for universal childcare (one of our chapter’s 2022 priority campaigns), grounded in an 2016 interview with Nancy Fraser linked here:

Capitalism’s Crisis of Care; Interview with Nancy Fraser in Dissent (2016). From the interview: “I would insist on is that reimagining social reproduction must be central to any form of socialism that we could claim as desirable in the twenty-first century. How should the reproduction/production distinction be reinvented today, and what can replace the two-earner family?”

Mutual Aid Committee Rules/Bylaws Party

Thursday, December 16 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Join the Mutual Aid Committee for our annual Rules Party, where we review and revise our committee rules for the coming year! Rules aren’t inherently fun, but we’ll do our best to make them that way as we go through them! This will be a Zoom event, but sit down with a snack or beverage!

Please RSVP for meeting connection information.

Holidarity Forever: A DSA-LA Winter Social

Friday, December 17 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

An RSVP is Required to Join This Event. Click here to RSVP now!

The annual holiday social put on by the Political Education committee is back!

Come join fellow socialists for an evening of drinks, merriment, and sneak previews of projects coming up next year!

We will also be featuring a special Year in Review edition of Whose Party Line is it Anyway? , our committee left-wing trivia game, as well as our Holiday Book Exchange. Please feel free to bring a book that you’d be willing to exchange for one another comrade brought!

We hope to see you there, and to close out 2021 in style!
