Dear Friend,

Last week’s Special Session of the General Assembly had plenty of exciting outcomes, as well as some disheartening ones. A number of crucial bills underwent successful veto overrides — the Transit Safety and Investment Act, the Dignity Not Detention Act, and the Driver Privacy Act have all become law! These pieces of legislation establish long-overdue public transit investments and meaningful immigration system reforms. We’re also thrilled that Maryland lawmakers overrode Gov. Hogan’s vetoes of bills that will reform the parole process and establish collective bargaining rights for community college employees.

Unfortunately, another critical bill that would decriminalize drug paraphernalia (SB 420) was tabled indefinitely — essentially meaning it was taken out of veto override consideration entirely. Read on to learn more about the veto overrides we’re celebrating and why there’s plenty of work ahead for us during the upcoming 2022 Session. And speaking of 2022 — election campaigns are well-underway, and we have plenty of opportunities to get involved with progressive candidates! This and much more in this week’s memo.

In Solidarity,
The Progressive Maryland Team
