John, today at 6:00 PM is the candidate filing deadline for the TX-28 race.

After this deadline, we’ll get a better sense of the field we’re up against in the fight to unseat Henry Cuellar in Congress. But we just got word that Cassy Garcia — a former Ted Cruz staffer — just joined the TX-28 race with his endorsement:

Texas Republicans like Ted Cruz are hellbent on flipping our district in their favor. That’s why Ted Cruz is working overtime to send conservatives to Congress who will work against creating a just and humane immigration system by further militarizing the border and giving a leg-up to for-profit immigration detention centers. So we can’t take this lightly — not even for a second.

Growing up in Laredo, Jessica saw first-hand that the laws of this country weren’t written for everyone.

Inspired by the struggles of her own neighbors, Jessica became an immigration attorney to protect the rights of undocumented people and immigrants. As a Congresswoman, she’ll fight to keep families together and work on creating a fair path to citizenship.

Jessica is the best candidate who will fight for the needs of all South Texans — unlike Henry Cuellar who has spent the past 15 years ignoring our progressive priorities in Congress. Cuellar’s not just an out-of-touch corporate Democrat. He’s also a weak candidate to face off against the Republicans next November.

Although Texas’ 28th District reliably votes Democratic, Cuellar’s 16+ year record of selling out our district for his corporate donors puts us in danger of losing this seat to the Republicans altogether. That’s why it’s doubly important we secure the Democratic nomination for Jessica Cisneros.
