This chilling line lifted from a PowerPoint prepared by Trump’s staff on the evening of January 5th, 2021, proves just how close we came to losing our democracy.

Their plan was to brief this slide deck to members of Congress and coordinate an effort to reject the certification of the 2020 presidential election to keep Donald Trump in power -- indefinitely.

What’s terrifying is that it could have worked. All that was needed was for a few Senators to tip the scales and pressure the rest of Republicans in Congress to go along with the plan.

It cannot be overstated how dangerous this moment was. The true existential threat to our republic was coming from inside the house.

To guard against anything like this happening again, we have to elect leaders who stand on principle and put our democracy before party loyalty every single time.

The looming threat of another attempted coup is bad enough, John, but it doesn’t end there. The fight over Build Back Better has proven that having a simple majority in the Senate isn’t nearly good enough.

Conservative Democrats like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema have used their de facto veto power as the deciding votes to repeatedly sabotage everything from voting rights to lowering prescription drug costs to paid family leave.

But we can strip that power away from them and fight for things that will help working people -- like student debt cancellation, living wages, and universal healthcare.
