Team—
This November, we joined our Tanzanian partner, Legal and Human Rights Centre, to argue before the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child on behalf of six Tanzanian girls who were expelled from school for being pregnant.
For years, the Tanzanian government has forced public school girls to undergo pregnancy testing and has permanently expelled them if pregnant, denying girls the opportunity to complete their formal education.
But on November 25, Tanzania's Minister of Education announced the country would end the oppressive and grossly discriminatory practice of barring pregnant girls and adolescent mothers from school.
This is an important first step, but we will continue to pursue our case until this change is lasting and permanent.
Will you make a gift today to ensure we can continue to fight back against discriminatory laws and policies like this wherever we're needed?
When you do, a generous Center donor has pledged to match every dollar you donate with an additional three dollars—up to $150,000—to make your contribution go FOUR TIMES as far protecting reproductive rights around the world.
Education is the most direct pathway to a better life for girls living in poverty. But for years, the Tanzanian government has failed to meet international human rights standards, denying girls the opportunity to complete their education and pursue their personal and professional goals.
With your support, we will remain vigilant to ensure the government makes good on its promise to end this discriminatory practice.
Give now to make FOUR TIMES the impact in our work fighting so that no one has to endure this type of treatment again.
In solidarity,
Evelyne Opondo
