Transdev cuts health insurance for strikers, walks away from table
For the second time in a week, WMATA's private contractor Transdev walked away from the bargaining table despite their workers being out on strike at WMATA's Cinder Bed Road Bus Garage. And in another union busting tactic to break the growing strike, Transdev announced they plan to remove all of the striking workers from their health insurance effective last Saturday. The workers walked out on October 24 to protest Transdev's unfair labor practices. "We will not be intimidated," said ATU president John Costa. "This company has treated these workers like this for over a year, this is only the most recent example in a long line of cruel actions." Sharita Autry, a bus operator at Cinder Bed Garage and one of the union's most dedicated supporters, marched on the picket line despite being 9 months pregnant and on October 30th, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl Layla Autry. "Transdev believes that this worker and her child do not deserve healthcare," said ATU Local 689. "Transdev has failed to provide service for 10 days," said Raymond Jackson, President and Business Agent of ATU Local 689. "Now they won't provide healthcare to their workers. Can someone tell me what value this company provides to WMATA at all?" Picketing continues daily and a major rally is planned at WMATA headquarters Wednesday at noon (see Calendar for details).
NED workers join OPEIU 2
Workers at the [link removed] National Endowment For Democracy voted last week to be represented by [link removed] OPEIU Local 2. The victory -- with nearly 90% voting for the union -- came after three other DC-based international grant-making organizations unionized with Local 2, two in the past fifteen months. "It's been so meaningful to be a small part of the organizing effort and to put my values into practice in the workplace. I'm so proud of the work we've done to make this happen," said Alex Steiner, Program Assistant for the Eurasia team at NED. "We're excited to see how collective bargaining will make a difference at the place we work everyday." NED is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world.

CSA featured in workplace giving campaign
The Community Services Agency was a featured nonprofit at the DC Department of Human Resources DC One Fund workplace giving event this past Wednesday. CSA Executive Director Sonte DuCote and other organizations' representatives made brief presentations about their work and spoke with DHS workers and AFSCME Local 2401 members like Latese M. Barksdale, Vocational Development Specialist for the Families First Program. "Workplace giving events are a great way to learn about organizations like CSA that have a daily impact on our communities," said DuCote. Delano Hunter, Director of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, and this year's DC One Fund Chairman, also attended. "Please consider donating to the CSA at your workplace giving campaign using the numbers below or by visiting our [link removed] website," said DuCote.

Solidarity Center: New Report--Freedoms on the Move
Freedoms on the Move, a new report by Solidarity Center and CIVICUS, makes clear that many migrant workers and refugees want to have a say in their communities and their workplaces, and in the decisions that affect their lives--and is an urgent call to action for unions and other civil society groups to include migrant workers and refugees in advancing these rights. The report was launched in New York City, where Felipe Gonzalez Morales, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, was among special guests asserting that migrant rights are human rights.
