Republicans are using hyper-partisan gerrymandering to give themselves the House in 2022.

Team,

Last Monday, the Department of Justice sued Texas, stating that the state's plan to redraw its voting districts was in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

To counter a growing Latinx population in the Houston area, Republicans gave themselves a new, safe Republican district composed of a largely white population, by shrinking Future Forum member Lizzie Fletcher’s (TX-07) district, along with other nearby Democratic held seats.

Along with their attacks on voting rights this year, Republicans are also using hyper-partisan gerrymandering to give themselves the House in 2022 – but Future Forum Democrats will not go down without a fight.

Despite the growing Latinx population, Republicans chose to not draw a new Latinx majority district, instead opting to split the dense Hispanic population across four districts, as opposed to providing a district in which they could choose their own representative.

Adding a majority Latinx district seems like it would actually help Republicans given that Trump made gains with Latinx voters in Texas last year!

Diluting Latinx voting power is a potential violation of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits maps that diminish the ability of a certain race to elect its candidates of choice, and we support the Department of Justice bringing this matter to the courts.
