Team, Last Monday, the Department of Justice sued Texas, stating that the state's plan to redraw its voting districts was in violation of the Voting Rights Act. To counter a growing Latinx population in the Houston area, Republicans gave themselves a new, safe Republican district composed of a largely white population, by shrinking Future Forum member Lizzie Fletcher’s (TX-07) district, along with other nearby Democratic held seats. Along with their attacks on voting rights this year, Republicans are also using hyper-partisan gerrymandering to give themselves the House in 2022 – but Future Forum Democrats will not go down without a fight.
Despite the growing Latinx population, Republicans chose to not draw a new Latinx majority district, instead opting to split the dense Hispanic population across four districts, as opposed to providing a district in which they could choose their own representative. Adding a majority Latinx district seems like it would actually help Republicans given that Trump made gains with Latinx voters in Texas last year! Diluting Latinx voting power is a potential violation of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits maps that diminish the ability of a certain race to elect its candidates of choice, and we support the Department of Justice bringing this matter to the courts.
