Dear friend,
With a heavy heart, I am writing to let you know that Phil Harvey, an extraordinary man, and active member of FAMM's board, passed away on December 3. You may have never heard of Phil because he was so humble, but if you've benefited from FAMM's work, you’ve felt his impact.
The first time I really understood Phil's commitment to FAMM's cause was when he attended a gathering of FAMM families at a church in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the homecoming of two men whose sentences were commuted by President Clinton in 2001. After the commutees spoke about their time in prison, Phil got up and left the church. I followed him and asked if he was okay. He said he was angry. He was angry that those two men had served ANY time in prison!
I was awed by his depth of feeling about two men he had never met, and the injustice of their sentences. But that was Phil. He was deeply committed to the underdog, especially if the government seemed to be unfairly targeting them.
Already FAMM's most generous financial donor, Phil joined our board of directors and gave us his time, talent, and wisdom. Phil was president of his own successful nonprofit, DKT International, and he shared expertise with us. He was always so proud of FAMM's accomplishments. And because he was such an accomplished and decent man, his encouragement and enthusiasm for our work meant the world to us.
We already miss Phil dearly.
Sincerely,
Julie Stewart
