Fighting for our families Hello John, No mother should have to resort to contacting the media to get their child with SMI out of jail, but that’s just what Martha Stringer did in the summer of 2020, when all other options had failed. It worked. That’s the power of storytelling, to shine a light on injustices and change the system, a system that criminalizes mental illness while erecting barriers to treatment. Now that her daughter is out of jail, in treatment and making progress, Martha is partnering with Treatment Advocacy Center to raise awareness about the need for assisted outpatient treatment programs in her state. And elected leaders are listening. “My first priority will always be my daughter, but no one’s family member should ever be criminalized for experiencing mental illness. I’ll never stop fighting to bring about change.” Read Martha’s full story, here.
