What we’ve suspected has been confirmed: Climate change is fueling hotter temperatures and drier conditions across the world. This is contributing to longer and more intense wildfire seasons.

John,

What we’ve suspected has been confirmed: Climate change is fueling hotter temperatures and drier conditions across the world. This is contributing to longer and more intense wildfire seasons.

According to the European Union’s earth observing program, climate change-generated wildfires produced a record amount of carbon emissions in the United States, Turkey, and parts of Siberia in 2021.

The scientists estimate 1.76 billion tons of carbon were emitted by prolonged wildfires this year. That’s the equivalent of over 25% of annual carbon emissions in the United States.

The good news?

Thanks to SEEC members of Congress, the recently passed infrastructure bill includes $47 billion as the most significant investment in climate resiliency in U.S. history.

The funding will help communities across the nation prepare for increasing wildfires, floods, droughts, and storms scientists are warning are worsened by climate change.

But here’s the reality, John. The $47 billion is a down payment on building climate resiliency. We can’t afford to make this a one-off investment while hoping the economic damages of a warming planet will be mitigated.

That’s why we need more SEEC members in Congress who will continue to press for more funding to support the level of federal government-driven action needed to fully address the worst effects of climate change.
