Good news -- we are working towards changing the way we
respond to behavioral health emergencies in
Michigan!
Senate Bills 637-8, bills sponsored by Senator Rick Outman and myself,
are headed to the Governor's desk! The bills passed the Senate
unanimously earlier this fall and just passed the House on Thursday
with broad bipartisan support. There are a lot of
bills I care about, but these are truly special and meaningful. We
know that far too many people who call for help in a behavioral health
emergency end up with a loved one in jail or prison, or worse, someone
gets injured or killed. We can and must do better. Our bills
help boost local efforts to ensure that trained behavioral health
professionals are on scene to help respond and get the individual in
crisis the support and services they need. Cynthia
Harrison, Summer Berman, and I were on the Detroit Today show last
month talking about how important these bills are for public safety
and the well-being of those facing mental illness. Click here to take a listen! There are
often some hard days and weeks in the legislature. When bills like
these move closer to becoming law, it reminds me why I ran for office
in the first place and reminds me that I am making the kind of impact
my residents deserve. I will keep working as hard as I can to get
things done. Thank you for your ongoing support. I wouldn't
have the honor of serving in the Michigan legislature or be able to do
this work without you!
Sincerely,
