States and localities have the power to protect and expand reproductive freedom, ensuring access to reproductive health care – including abortion – no matter who sits on the Supreme Court, in Congress, or in the White House. And in 2021, we made some incredible strides:

--Virginia: For the second year in a row, this important access hub has removed barriers to care. Building on its rollback of medically unnecessary restrictions in 2020, the state now allows private insurance plans on its healthcare exchange to offer abortion coverage. This change helps protect patients from high out-of-pocket costs that might have prevented them from accessing these services.

--Louisville, Kentucky: Working with local activists, we helped secure a city safety zone ordinance to protect the state's only abortion providers. We continue to support efforts to ensure implementation of this new measure, while grappling with the appropriate role played by the police in securing patient and provider safety.

--Kalamazoo, MI and Portland, OR: Building on our landmark wins to secure funding to support abortion access in New York City and Austin, TX, these two cities created new funding streams that make equitable access to abortion more of a reality.
