JOE IN THE POLLS
I entered the Presidential race four weeks ago — announcing late because of my daughter's brain cancer, ensuring she was in a safe harbor before jumping in. I've run a grassroots (some might say grass seeds, as it is growing) campaign, shaking 25,000 hands and handing out over 45,000 brochures across Iowa (running in seven parades, visiting dozens of local Democratic Party groups, attending church services and chamber of commerce meetings and meeting veterans at their gatherings).
There isn't a big money campaign yet, but my message of accountability to unite this nation is already getting out: In the latest YouGov Iowa poll, I'm even with great candidates like Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Governor John Hickenlooper and Reps. Beto O’Rourke and John Delaney - and ahead of fine candidates who've been in the race much longer, like Senator Michael Bennet, Governors Jay Inslee and Steve Bullock, Reps. Tulsi Gabbard, Tim Ryan and Seth Moulton, and Mayor Bill de Blasio.
I've also registered in other polls where we have already focused on building communities of supporters, such as Alabama (3% in the polling), as we also steadily expand our number of growing state support groups like in California, where I'll be having a call with hundreds of our activists on Wednesday.
I know past is not prologue, but I have known — and enjoyed — challenges in other races where I've started over 30 points behind, like my first congressional race against Republican Curt Weldon (to become the second Democrat to represent my district since the Civil War), or my Senate primary race against Republican-turned-Democratic Senator Arlen Specter (who was supported by the Democratic Party elite).
And I know that with my great team — who is really responsible for this, along with you — we will continue to build a movement based on my very simple message: that our next President must be one who Americans — all Americans — know will be accountable to them, above party, above self, above any special interest. There is no way to meet the defining challenges of our time without a united America.
