The latest school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, is still on my mind.

As a nearly-40-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, I know what weapons of war are capable of. As a parent, I cannot even imagine what the victims’ families are going through.

We have a gun violence epidemic in this country – one that we can reverse if we are willing to actually stand up to the NRA and pass common-sense gun safety laws that are supported by 90% of Americans and even the vast majority of gun owners.

But Republicans like my opponent Chuck Grassley are standing in the way. Just days after 4 more families were torn apart forever, Grassley stood up and blocked Senator Chris Murphy’s bill requiring universal background checks for gun purchases.
