Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Texas abortion ban―the most restrictive abortion law since the passage of Roe v. Wade. If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade this coming June, many U.S. states are poised to ban abortion access completely, including states like Michigan which still have pre-Roe laws in place.

Michigan’s nearly-century-old law criminizaling abortions is not currently in effect, thanks to the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision. But it could be enforced as soon as this summer, depending on what happens with the Supreme Court.

Abortion advocates have pushed to repeal the law and guarantee the right to abortion care in Michigan, but with a Republican-majority legislature, it’s been a fight.

In addition, Michigan has some of the worst maternal and infant mortality rates, which disproportionately affect Black women and children due to systemic racism and medical bias.

In my hometown of Detroit, pregnant Black women are 4.5 times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than white women. Black women also face increased barriers to abortion access. This is unacceptable.

One of the best ways you can help is by supporting on-the-ground abortion funds, which help people pay for often-expensive abortion procedures.

Only two local abortion funds operate in Michigan, and only one operates in and near my district—which is one of the lowest-wealth districts in the country.

The Michigan WIN Fund helps people who can give birth pay for their clinic fee in addition to transportation costs to and from the clinic (which can be over 100 miles), childcare support, and potentially lodging and food. As the Fund explains on their website: There is no choice without access.
