This week, one of the leaders of the Trump cult in the House of Representatives – and one of Trump’s biggest lackeys, period – Matt Gaetz, gave us a preview of how a Republican majority House would operate if they had the body’s oversight powers.
“We are going to take power after this next election and when we do, it’s not going to be the days of Paul Ryan and Trey Gowdy and no real oversight and no real subpoenas,” Gaetz told a news conference, referring to the former Speaker of the House and the congressman who himself abused his oversight authority in leading the baseless multi-year Benghazi witch hunt.
Gaetz continued, “It’s going to be the days of Jim Jordan and Marjorie Taylor Greene and Dr. [Paul] Gosar and myself doing everything to get the answers” to already debunked ‘questions’ about the FBI’s involvement in the deadly January 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol. He was alluding to a baseless and truly inflammatory conspiracy theory that the insurrection was a “false flag” operation to frame Trump and his supporters.
Trump Republicans using the House’s oversight power as a political weapon to pursue wild conspiracy theories promoted online and by unaccountable far-right media figures … that’s what we’re facing, and it’s just one reason the stakes in 2022 are so high.
