Dear Friend ,
Yet again, the Supreme Court has failed to protect Texans’ constitutional right to abortion. In a ruling issued Friday, December 10, the Court significantly gutted abortion providers’ legal challenge to Texas’s 6-week ban and permitted the unconstitutional ban to remain in effect. While the Court did not put a complete end to the abortion provider’s case, the Court’s actions continue to give other states the green light to implement copycat laws.
While this case is specific to Texas, this decision shows how dire the threats to reproductive healthcare access are everywhere and highlights the importance of us continuing to fight locally to expand access right here in the DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia region. Thank you for your work with us in the past, and we hope you will join us moving forward. In DC, we have been proud to help pass legislation prohibiting governmental interference with abortion, and we will continue the fight for DC Statehood to eliminate the threat of Congressional inference in DC residents’ ability to access care locally, including its current block of locally raised Medicaid dollars being used to cover abortion. In Virginia, with you by our side, we were able to help roll back targeted regulations of abortion providers – like mandatory medically unnecessary ultrasounds and a 24 hour waiting period – and will continue to work hard to protect abortion access despite the hostile incoming administration. And in Maryland, which you have helped make a leader for reproductive rights, we are excited to work with you and community partners in the upcoming state legislative session to remove significant barriers that continue to exist for Marylanders to access care.
We invite you to join our local-level efforts to protect abortion rights and sign up to join the fight here.
In the meantime, we also encourage you to donate to the Texas Abortion Fund to support Texans during this difficult time. Also, you can add your signature to this petition to the Supreme Court showing that you stand with the majority of people who support reproductive freedom.
We look forward to working with you to change the political and legislative landscape that threatens abortion access and to advocate for legislation to improve access to abortion in our region and across the country.
Thank you for standing with us.
