Dear Friend,

When my wife Stefania and I took our baby, Lucas, to the U.S. Embassy in London to get him a passport, the officer barraged us with invasive questions. Who carried Lucas? Whose eggs were used? Whose sperm? Where was the donor from? We were shocked.

Because Stefania carried Lucas, and she is not a U.S. citizen like I am, the U.S. State Department treated him as if he were “born out of wedlock.” As if Stefania were a single parent. And as if I were not his parent at all.

We knew this was illegal and discriminatory, so we sought guidance from the experts: Immigration Equality. They helped us sue the State Department, and after a more than four-year rollercoaster, the government changed its policy! Now, Lucas is a citizen, and no family like ours will ever have to go through what we did. With your help, Immigration Equality can secure even more monumental victories for LGBTQ immigrants and families.

Immigration Equality has already raised one third of their year-end fundraising goal of $300,000! I know they can reach their goal—but not without your support. Contribute to Immigration Equality’s life-changing work on Human Rights Day, and a generous donor will DOUBLE your gift.

We can fuel the next big win for LGBTQ immigrants and families!

Your generosity allowed Immigration Equality to win citizenship for three other young children in lawsuits against the State Department: Ethan Dvash-Banks in California, Kessem Kiviti in Maryland, and Simone Mize-Gregg in Georgia. They were also deemed “born out of wedlock.”

While Lucas and the other children won’t remember the battles for citizenship, they will come to understand how hard their parents fought for them. They'll learn how they were part of a remarkable victory for queer families—and that there are many more victories to be won.

Together, I know we can fuel the next big win for LGBTQ immigrants and families! If you contribute today, your donation will be matched 100% by a generous donor. You’ll have double the impact. And remember, every gift—no matter how big or small—makes a huge difference.
