After yesterday’s exciting update from New York, I’m excited to share even more good news with you. The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) just got its newest state party: Mongolia!



Mongolia has a long history of opposing nuclear weapons. Bordering nuclear-armed states China and Russia, it even declared itself a single-state nuclear-weapon-free zone in 1992. And it has consistently supported a global ban on nuclear weapons, voting in favour of the creation and adoption of the TPNW, and repeatedly calling for all countries to join it.



Today, it has taken another big step by depositing its instrument of accession to the UN office of legal affairs <[link removed]>, thus becoming the treaty’s 57th state party. Of course, we want to congratulate our partners in Mongolia for all they did to achieve this success.



By joining now, Mongolia will be able to participate in the first Meeting of States Parties taking place in Vienna next year, as a full state party. For states wishing to participate as states parties at next year’s first Meeting of States Parties, the deadline to join the treaty is December 22, 2021.
