Senate Democrats must pass the Build Back Better bill before Christmas to make sure it doesn’t fall victim to election-year gridlock.
But there are two "Grinches" standing in the way: Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema.
Sens. Manchin and Sinema are raising money hand over fist from corporations that oppose the bill, throwing up one objection after another. And Democratic leaders and the corporate media refuse to call them out.
Enough is enough. It’s time to stop handling them with kid gloves. We need to turn up the pressure now.
That’s why the team here at Inequality Media Civic Action is calling out Manchin and Sinema—and their corporate donors—through our millions of followers across social media and making sure their own constituents know the truth.
The Build Back Better bill is sorely needed. For the first time ever, this bill would provide nationwide paid family leave. It would expand Medicare to include vision, hearing, and dental. It would be the largest step the country has ever taken to tackle the climate crisis. And the ultra-rich would finally pay more of their fair share of taxes.
These policies are supported by huge super-majorities of voters across party lines. But just last week, Manchin said he wanted to press "pause" on the measure. In an interview with CNN, Sinema wouldn’t say whether she would vote yes on the package—even though she’s already paid a huge role in whittling down its most progressive provisions.
Meanwhile, according to campaign-finance tracking by Accountable.US, Manchin has taken more than $1.5 million from corporations that are opposed to the bill as of September, and Sinema got nearly $1 million.
The corporate media is only making the problem worse, regurgitating spin from Manchin and Sinema about the deficit and giving them a free pass for their huge conflicts of interest and campaign donors.
