Hi John, 73 years ago, the United Nations signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a global roadmap for freedom and equality. We celebrate this milestone not just today, but every day by striving to protect the rights of every last child. This Human Rights Day, we need to help the millions of kids in Afghanistan whose futures are under threat. John, Afghan children have known nothing but conflict their entire lives. School used to provide a safe place for them to learn and play amid the chaos – but now, millions have lost even that. Our sister organization, Save the Children, has been on the ground in Afghanistan since 1976 and is working to establish temporary learning spaces to offer support to displaced children as they navigate stressful emergency situations. But a system of U.S. and international sanctions is hindering humanitarian organizations from bringing these lifesaving education programs to girls and boys in need. The U.S. government has allowed organizations like Save the Children to offer services across most humanitarian sectors as an exemption to these sanctions. However, education was not included. Tell President Biden: we must immediately include education programs under existing humanitarian exemptions so children across Afghanistan can continue their schooling. Education is a proven ladder out of poverty. It protects kids from child labor and recruitment into armed groups, can prevent child marriage and early pregnancy and provides access to other critical services that support health, nutrition and psychosocial development. With the triple threat of COVID-19, climate-related disasters and escalating conflict, the children of Afghanistan need access to education – a protective lifeline -- now more than ever. Urge President Biden to remove all barriers and ensure aid organizations are able to resume education programs in Afghanistan today! Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
