ON MIGRANT PROTECTION PROTOCOLS:
DHS has announced the reinstatement of the Trump-era Migrant Protection Protocols (Remain in Mexico). Yet another failed promise by this administration, and another blow to an already failing asylum system. The Biden Administration claims it will work with the Mexican government to ensure safeguards and legal representation for people, yet there has been no details provided on how they plan to do so. There is no way to make an unlawful, inhumane, and dangerous policy workable.

Under MPP, the U.S. government sent nearly 70,000 people seeking humanitarian protection to dangerous areas of Mexico to await their hearings, leading thousands to suffer. This program subjects those fleeing perilous and dangerous situations to further trauma, suffering and uncertainty.

We continue to demand this administration end MPP completely, end title 42, and restore asylum. Until that day we will continue to fight and advocate against harmful policies like MPP.
PROGRAM UPDATES:

We are so grateful to our Water Drop team who took advantage of the long weekend to venture out into the wilderness on two days. We left food, water and cold weather supplies in distant areas along the U.S. / Mexico border, to prevent harm to those crossing through the desert. We recognize there is a variety of reasons why crossing through the mountains and desert happen. Migrants are trying to reconnect with family, trying to create a future for themselves and those they had to leave behind back home, and other personal reasons.

Our long hikes for one day are nothing in comparison to the journey those crossing will take. We do what we need to, to try to minimize the danger and harm. Thank you to all our team members that came out this holiday weekend and put in the necessary work.

We have helped another person out of for-profit immigration prison! Deniz is a 23-year-old asylum seeker from Turkey who spent 3 months inside the Imperial Regional Detention Center and our 98th bond recipient.

We are so happy to know one more person is free from the threat of COVID inside detention prison. We are so close to our goal of assisting 100 people and help free them from immigration detention. Revamped MPP program still violates rights of asylum-seekers, California immigration attorney says
The return of the Migrant Protection Protocols program, also known as “Remain in Mexico,” is not being greeted with open arms according to Dulce Garcia, an immigration attorney in San Diego.

“All around, horrible news really,” said Garcia. “Certainly a sad day for those of us that practice immigration law and serve our immigrant community, especially asylum-seeking families.”

Garcia added the new MPP, which is being implemented under a new set of guidelines, might be “worse” than the original version.

Many immigration attorneys are appalled at the amount of bonds placed by immigration judges, especially because it is done so arbitrarily. A bond starts at $1500, and from there can skyrocket to up $30,000. The majority of people don’t have the money to pay for such high bond amounts, but thanks to our bond program there’s a bit of hope!

As mentioned, for-profit corporations like the GEO group end up being the most benefited by detention systems, who make a big profit of off holding people for ransom. Both in comparing cases among colleagues and through our program we have seen that immigrants of color, particularly black migrants, receive disproportionately higher bonds.

“If it wasn’t for our communities we wouldn’t have the funds to help the almost 100 individuals we’ve assisted,” said Dulce Garcia.
