Huge news from Scotland. The company behind the Cambo oil field in the North Sea has put the entire project on hold.

Oil giant Shell also pulled out of Cambo last week after huge public pressure and big financial concerns. And now Siccar Point Energy has been forced to pause the project. That’s fantastic news for the planet.

Thank you to everyone who has campaigned or donated to stop the Cambo oil field. From the thousands of you who signed our petition, to the dozens of grassroots groups and NGOs (not least our friends up in Friends of the Earth Scotland!), you’ve helped make Cambo’s reputation totally toxic.

This is a real hammer blow for the project.

But the UK government’s hypocrisy on fossil fuels means our campaign isn’t over.

Until it puts a stop to the Cambo oil field once and for all we need to keep the pressure up.

And beyond Cambo, there are 28 other offshore oil and gas projects in the pipeline for approval by 2025. The government must rule out all new fossil fuel extraction projects if it’s serious about addressing the climate crisis. Like Boris Johnson claimed to be at COP26.

Instead of fossil fuels, it must invest in clean energy and a just transition for oil and gas workers – to make sure they have access to well paid, secure green jobs.
