{{else}}{{end}}My name is Valerie Foushee. I was born in Orange County, North Carolina, and have lived here for my entire life. Now, I’m running to represent my community in the U.S. House of Representatives.

It wasn’t always easy for me growing up. I was the oldest of six children and was born to two teenage parents. I watched my parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet and attended segregated schools until sixth grade. But even with these challenges, my parents instilled in me the importance of community, hard work, service to your neighbors, and education. These values still shape who I am today.

While in high school, I worked as a church secretary, a clerk at a recreation center, and at UNC Hospitals, delivering food trays to patients to save for college. High school was also where I met my partner for life, Stan. We dated all through high school and have been married for 44 years — we also raised two wonderful sons together! I worked hard to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (go Tar Heels!), and this educational background set me up for a lifetime commitment to service.

As a parent to young children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City schools system, I would leave work at the Chapel Hill Police Department at 7:00 a.m. to volunteer in my children's classrooms until 9:00 a.m. Through that volunteer service, I learned that kids, especially black and brown kids, could use another champion on the School Board who was always looking out for them and their success. So I ran, and I won.

Over the next twenty-four years, I served on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board, was the first African American female elected to the Orange County Board of Commissioners, and served in the North Carolina state House and then state Senate. In each of those elected positions, I focused on the issues that matter most: a good education, creating good-paying jobs, and being a champion for underrepresented communities.

In the General Assembly, I worked across the aisle to increase access to health care and end the practice of child marriage. I also stood up to radical Republicans when they attacked a woman’s right to choose, targeted our immigrant communities, and attempted to strip North Carolinians of their voting rights.

I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished as a public servant, but I’m not finished making a positive difference in my community. That’s why I’m running for Congress. Will you help us launch our campaign in the right direction by donating today?

If elected to Congress, I will be a champion for working families, a leader to reform our criminal justice system and tackle systemic racism, and a fighter to protect our environment and address climate change. I hope you’ll help me get there by supporting my campaign for Congress in North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District today.

Thank you for your time,

Valerie Foushee
