A greener, cleaner Bilborough!

We are proud of our parks and open spaces and value the hundreds of trees in our ward.  Sadly some of those trees, the beautiful chestnuts on the green between Melbury Road and Strelley Road, were found to have Sweet Chestnut Blight.

They had to be felled and every trace removed so they didn't infect other trees nearby, particularly in Strelley Rec.  We will be replanting other trees there and will let you know the plans so you can take part.

Many of you will know the magnificent Burnside roundabout with its shrub beds and mature trees. Sadly the beds became overgrown during lockdown, but thanks to a joint effort between Councillors, council staff and Nottingham City Homes, they have now been restored to their former glory.

Proud of our young Clean Champions!

Do you know about Nottingham Clean Champions?

Throughout the City there are thousands of volunteers who collect litter and keep their streets clean and tidy. Both adults and children can take part - so you could litter pick on your own, with a friend or with children.

We're delighted that students from Nottingham University Samworth Academy have become Clean Champions and have pledged to keep their area as litter free as possible.

Of course if everyone cared for their environment there would be no litter, and we can all do our bit by encouraging others to use a bin or take their rubbish home.

If you'd like to be a Clean Champion yourself, sign up online now.

Housing & Green Spaces in and around Bilborough

bilborough

We face both a national housing crisis and a global climate crisis, both of which impacts on us here in Bilborough.

Publicly owned land is an important local resource. We live in an area of dense housing, but it has green spaces, which we need to protect. The city council also has a plan for urban/city forests and tree planting initiatives. Even small green areas could potentially contribute to our carbon reduction targets.

We need more discussions now about the use of our green spaces as we face new economic difficulties.

Recently, we've been talking to local residents in the ward about planting trees and potential sites for small urban forests in our ward. It would be great to hear what you think. Drop us an email using our contact details below.

Helping address the local issues that affect you

\waez

Your ward councillors Wendy, Rebecca and Phil are pleased to be able to get councillors surgeries back underway and take part in ward walks around our area. Ward walks take place alongside Community Protection Officers, Nottingham City Homes and cleansing teams, so that we can spot local issues and put in place plans to address them.

In September, we did a ward walk around the Bramhall Road area, in October around Glaisdale Drive and in November, we will be around Birchover Road. We advertise these walks ahead of time and are always pleased to be joined by local residents to hear and see your concerns directly.

Meet your local Councillors!

Christmas presents

Don't get caught out this Christmas

Nottingham City Council’s Trading Standards team are asking Nottingham residents to be careful when buying presents for children:

  • Look for the CE or UKCA mark: These symbols on the label or box mean the manufacturer has assessed the toy for safety
  • Button-batteries can kill:  Check they are screwed in firmly and safely before giving to a child
  • Check age restrictions: Toys must be clearly marked with age restrictions - always follow them, they’re there for a reason

Christmas money tips

bills

With increases in bills and the cost of living as well as taxes going up and continuing issues around the pandemic, this Christmas will be a tough one for many.

Taking out payday or doorstep loans is a bad idea - they might seem like an easy way to get cash quickly, but you'll end up paying an arm and a leg due to sky-high interest rates.

The cheapest places to borrow money will always be a bank, building society or Notts and Lincs Credit Union - who may be able to help where others can't if you have a poor credit history.

Making your money go further

Council Tax Support

If you are on Universal Credit, you can get help with Council Tax costs. You need to make a separate claim for Council Tax Support. Apply online.

Pension Credit

Did you know that over a third of those entitled to Pension Credit haven't yet claimed it?  Check now if you are eligible: either use the online calculator or call Age UK Notts on 0115 844 0011.

Warm Home Discount

Could you get the Warm Home Discount of £140?  It's for those on low income and certain benefits.  See if you may be able to claim it

⚠️ Scam warning ⚠️

Warning – criminals are using the NHS Covid Pass and pretending to be the NHS as a way to target the public by convincing them to hand over money, financial details and personal information.

For information on how to get your free NHS COVID Pass, visit www.nhs.uk/nhscovidpass.

On scams generally - remember, if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. These include festive getaways at very low prices and ‘easy’ ways to make money, like cryptocurrency and investments. Take a moment to check Citizens Advice’s Online Scams Helper to protect yourself.
