John,Â
Today, the New York City Council overwhelmingly voted to pass Intro 1867, with 33Â Council Members supporting the bill. While some states across the country are restricting access to the ballot, NYC is extending the right to vote to nearly one million New Yorkers, making this the largest expansion of voting rights in a generation. Thanks to the work of our members and partners, immigrant New Yorkers with legal permanent residence status or work authorization will finally have a voice in our democracy.Â
Until now, these New Yorkers were silenced on the important issues impacting their lives—from the quality of their schools to public safety in their communities. Intro 1867 recognizes immigrant New Yorkers as integral to the fabric of our city. Now, they will no longer be relegated to the sidelines of our government. With the passage of Our City, Our Vote, immigrants will finally gain true representation in the halls of power.
