John,
Great news: the House just passed the Protecting Our Democracy Act!
This crucial bill will go a long way to shoring up our democracy—closing loopholes that enable abuses of power, strengthening Congressional oversight, and empowering watchdogs to ferret out waste, fraud and abuse. Some important amendments were also added along the way, including ones to strengthen enforcement of the Hatch Act, require public disclosure of White House visitors, prohibit the use of the White House for political events and require more disclosure for online ads.
This is a really big deal—and to add to the good news, earlier this week, President Biden publicly stated his strong support for the bill. The Protecting Our Democracy Act would limit presidential powers in order to prevent abuses, so it’s notable that the president has come out in support.
And now, it’s up to the Senate. With the filibuster still in place, it’s certainly going to be an uphill battle, just as it continues to be a challenge to get the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act passed. That’s why it’s so important to speak up and put pressure on the Senate to pass these critical democracy reform bills.
Here are a few ways you can help:
-
Call your senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them to support the Protecting Our Democracy Act.
-
Forward this email to friends who care about our democracy and ask them to join you in speaking out.
-
Share CREW’s posts on Twitter and Facebook calling on the Senate to delay their holiday recess until they pass democracy reform bills.
Fighting to protect our democracy has never been easy. But we’re so close to seeing some real progress in passing democracy reform—keeping up the pressure for reform is crucial.
Thank you for being a part of the fight,
Noah Bookbinder
