Turkish President Erdogan purged 2,600 military officers - including half of his country's fighter pilots - after an attempted coup in July 2016. Erdogan's newly purchased S-400 air and missile defense system is designed to both strengthen Turkey's strategic partnership with Russia and deter future coup attempts from Turkey's air force.
