Dear John, Freedom is always worth celebrating, but especially today. My friend and colleague, Bill Underwood, turns 68-years-young today and is marking his first birthday in 34 years outside prison walls. LET US CHEER!! To commemorate Bill’s birthday, I hope you will do your part in advocating for sentencing reforms that will bring people home who have already served decades in prison, transformed their lives, and deserve an opportunity to reunite with family and share their gifts with all of us.
The COVID-19 Safer Detention Act and the First Step Implementation Act would bring many people home so they may also experience the joy of a birthday liberated, by expanding eligibility for compassionate release to the oldest cohort in federal prisons and applying retroactive sentencing reforms enacted under the First Step Act. Both of these bills take a bipartisan approach to ensure more equity in the federal justice system. Please join me in celebrating Bill’s birthday by taking action now to support second chances for people serving extreme sentences in federal prisons. Thank you for your support, Kara
